District Study

Each Wednesday morning from 11am-1pm we meet together with the rest of the Missionaries in our district for district study. Elder Resek, our District Leader, usually leads a discussion of how we can become better missionaries, or how to use our scriptures, or how to teach lessons, etc. We usually each have some part or assignment and it's very informative! We also learn alot about how dedicated & wonderful these young missionaries are. Of course, we also see their fun side too! After District Study we always go out to eat. Here is a picture of our district:Left to right around the table: Elder Feng - who speaks Mandarin but was called here as a french-speaking missionary- so he learned French in the MTC and is gradually picking up English as well. What a guy! Elder Resek - our district leader - also speaks 3 languages, English, French, & Spanish. Elder Fitzgerald & his companion Elder Mollinet (whose name sounds French, but he's from St. George! ha!) Elder Holbrook and Elder Garcia - who used to work Cornwall only 2 days every other week because they live & work mostly in Hawkesbury which is an hour north. And, of course, the cutest one of the bunch - my companion, Elder Mahaffey- who also speaks 3 languages.... English, French, & Duck! We left there & taught our new investigator her 2nd lesson! She is wonderful & so excited to hear about the church. She was a music major and religion minor at the University. She is reading the Book of Mormon & puts sticky notes on every page, so she can ask us questions when we come. She came to church with us last Sunday, & hopefully she AND her husband will be coming this week! Then we had to run back over the border to the Walmart in the US for some more mission food for Sister Cannon (the mission president's wife). So, while there we were told to go onto the Indian Reservation to get our gas. (Gas is approx. $1.50 a gallon cheaper in the US - and it's about 10 - 15 cents cheaper on the reservation than in Messina, NY- the city just over the border.) This is a picture of the sign outside the gas station on the reservation. They also sell Indian made jewelry & stuff... but most of it is just manufactured somewhere else, it's not made by the Akwasasne Indians on this reservation. Fun times! Oh, and I also found out why Sister Cannon likes us to get the roasts at Wal-mart. We bought chuck roasts there for 3.98 a pound. In Montreal's Costco it is 11.98 a pound!!! I looked at a 2 lb. roast there that was $23.15 !!! AAAGGHHHH!!! Milk at Wal-mart... $3.00 a gallon. In Montreal, we have never found anywhere, Costco included, that even sells milk in a gallon jug. So we paid $3.85 for a half gallon. The best part of getting our gas on the reservation is that they give you a bridge pass so that you get back over the bridge for free - no $3.25 toll each way. So, it's totally worth it. Guess we'll be making a run to the states every so often for groceries & to gas up!
