I readily admit that this was all MY fault. And what a day to have it occur. First of all it was Friday the 13th...(not withstanding that it would have been my wonderful Mother's 99th birthday... still..) and secondly - it was our first REALLY HUGE STORM of the season. We had started with freezing rain the night before.. so our windows on the car were totally iced over. (thank heaven for those windshield covers!) Then sometime in the night it started snowing. It was snowing really hard all morning, but we had an 11 o'clock appointment & so we thought we'd brave the storm. Elder Mahaffey, being the wonderful guy he is, went down early to shovel snow from around our vehicle, start the car so it would warm up, as he tried to scrape ice & snow off the car. I came down about 7 minutes later. I jumped into the car where it was warm, and then noticed that on my side, the door was covered with snow on the inside. Apparently Roger's side door was frozen shut - so he got in on my side & left the door open, so it was covered with snow. I figured I'd help him, so I got out to get a towel from the back and wipe off the inside of the door. As I was wiping, I must have moved the towel over the door lock without knowing and so, when I shut the door to go back and put the towel away.... you guessed it... LOCKED OUT !!! So, the car was running, Roger was shoveling and my purse with the 2nd set of keys was locked inside.
The blessing in all of this was that the young Elders had spent the night with us the night before and they were still up in the apartment. So, we got to go back into the apartment, out of the snowstorm, and use their cell phone (since mine was in my purse inside the locked car) to call someone. Here in Canada locksmiths do not open cars, so I had to call a tow truck. Amazingly there was one close by who wasn't out of the highway pulling out all the cars from the ditch that had occurred in the snowstorm. The good news - he got the car open incredibly fast... the bad news... he got the car open INCREDIBLY fast!! .. and charged us $45 for his trouble. But, we made our 11 o'clock appointment and went directly to the store afterward to have more keys made! ha! We pretty much stayed in the rest of the day, because it just kept snowing and got worse and worse. Several members called just to make sure we were finally enjoying a real "Canadian Winter". ha!
